(Good) Friday April 2

Whew, has this week flown by or what? Today Mr. B is a chaperone on the laser tag trip and will be gone for periods 2-4. Here's the fun you'll have. . .
Daily 5:
1.  A new car is available in five different colors (white, black, silver, red, and blue) and with two different types of engines (manual and automatic).  How many different combinations of colors and engines could you order?
2.  The perimeter of a rectangle is 24 feet.  If the length is 7 feet, what is the width?  (HINT: draw a picture!)
3.  What is the area of the rectangle in problem 2?
4.  (3 + 7) x (4 + 1) = ______
5.  5,122 + 2,308 = ______

In Class:
1.  We begin our second round of OAKS testing on Monday.  Be sure to get plenty of rest the night before and if you have time over the busy weekend, review some of the topics we learned earlier this year (fractions, Hands On Equations concepts, graphing, etc.).  We will meet in the classroom on Monday before going to the computer lab.

2.  Review, score, and collect homework.
3.  Today you will watch more of the National Geographic "Human Footprint" series.  While watching, you need to keep track of how many of a certain item one American uses in a lifetime.  In other words, from last time, we know that the average American drinks 13,056 pints of milk and consumes 19,826 eggs.  Today, you will watch segments on fruits and vegetables, plastic, metal, "beauty" products, and water use.  Keep track of each item in your math spiral and be prepared to talk about what you've seen.
4.  Discussion Questions:
  • How do you feel after watching this film?  Why do you feel this way?
  • Which number has been most surprising to you?  Why?
  • What do you think the real message is in this film?
  • What are some things you could do to help reduce our use of these items?  America by FAR leads the world in consumption of most of these.
  • What questions do YOU have?

Hi Elsie -- Actually, your answer is a bit low. Have you tried a chart to organize your data? Keep track of each hour that passes. Make sure, too, that you start at the right value. You have 1 bacterium that doubles to 2 after 1/2 hour, so that would make 4 bacteria after 1 hour. Take it from there! Good luck!
