Some have called them the "missing link" between fish and amphibians -- life in the water and life on land. Scientists have known that these fish have existed for over 400 million years, but thought they were extinct for the last 50 million years. In 1938, a woman in South Africa discovered a very strange looking fish that turned out to be none other than a coelacanth! Some have called this the greatest biological discovery in history because what we learned from this creature provided many clues and answers about how organisms are linked in the fossil record.
You will view two clips from the TV show NOVA that document the story and why it's important. If you missed this in class, you need to provide 5 facts that you've learned to Mr. B as evidence that you viewed the clips. Then, you'll be prepared to do your writing assignment. Enjoy!
