Winter Olympics Graphing Project

Summary:
  • 2 stacked bar graphs (2010 medals table, 1988 medals table)
  • worksheet (both sides completed)
  • line graph (extra credit)
  • DUE TUESDAY, 3/9/2010
Details:
Well, we enjoyed the end of the 2010 Vancouver Games last weekend. What an amazing hockey game for the gold medal, eh? Let's take a look at the final medal table and turn it into a graph so we have a picture to use.

This is pretty sweet, but a picture (graph!) would look better. Your job is to create a stacked bar graph of this data for all 26 countries that earned a medal. Here's a picture of part of mine so you get the idea of how you could start yours on graph paper. (If you need paper, please see me.)

Now, let's compare the 2010 results with the last time Canada hosted the Winter Olympic games, 1988.  Can you see some differences here?  (Like countries that don't exist anymore!)
To compare "apples to apples," create a stacked bar graph of this data as well.  We'll answer some questions based on this data below.

Stacked Bar Graph Instructions:
  • Include a title and a key.
  • Each bar is the total number of medals that country won.  Inside each bar, show how many gold, silver, and bronze medals each country won.  (Look at my graph for help.)
  • Label each axis -- what are you graphing on each side of the graph?
  • Please use color!
