How GPS Works

GPS is a complex system of satellites orbiting the earth continually.  As we learned, there are a ton of uses for GPS technology -- not just helping us navigate our way around.  Let's see what you've learned about GPS.  Leave a comment on this post and answer the questions below.  (You can copy and paste the questions into your reply if you wish!)

  • Who put GPS satellites into orbit why?
  • How many satellites are orbiting earth right now?  How many of them are "active"?
  • Name two uses of GPS technology.
  • Do a web search to find a website (not a video) on how to read GPS coordinates.  Paste the URL of the website into your answer, and give a short explanation.
  • What's one thing you still want to know about GPS technology?

GPS works with 31 satellites that show where you are. They are extremely accurate but not completely.

The U.S military put the GPS satalights in orbit, so that they could better track the position of soldiers, boats, and help navigate planes to where they need to go.
